The Chaukhandi Graveyard is lying at a distance of about 27 km from Karachi, on Karachi Thatta road, spreading over a high ridge for about 1.5 km. The pyramidal tombs are of certain warrior Baloch families that settled in this area somewhere in 17th and 18th century A.D. Similar type of tombs are seen in southern Baluchistan in Lasbela, District Thatta and elsewhere. The Graves are decorated with stone slabs chiseled out in human, figural and other conventional designs. The most conspicuous feature of the graves is the devices signifying the gentler and the sterner sex. Depicted on male interments is the horseman with armaments like the shield, sword, arrow and bow. Some graves are crowned with a boss at the northern end of the top most slabs caricaturing the turban. The female graves are symbolized with ornament like the necklace bracelet, anklet ringlet etc. Most of the graves are erected over a raised platform suggestive to over ground mode of burial, and each platform bearing group of graves denotes that it was family burial ground. Few groups are constructed under pillared canopies, finished in different styles. The entombments on platform stand in single, double, triple, quadruple, quintuple sextuple and even multiple in numbers.
