                              The Spring of Makli Hills is a wonderful Recreation;

                        Those who experience it take it to be a place of pleasure,

                        In every corner (one finds) a cypress-stature beloved walking around;

                        Even though there is no cypress anywhere near;

                        All the time breeze is soul-inspiring;

                        Reminding one of Paradise;

                        Oh! There is the mausoleum of the great Sayyid (Shah Murad)

                        Which makes the dejected (Namurad) happy

This is the first time that the Department of Antiquities & Archaeology, Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Antiquities has organized an International Conference on World Heritage Site of Makli on 13 and 14 January,2018 at Makli Hills. The Conference has opened the door for the Scholars, Archaeologists and Heritage Experts around the globe to come and witness the glory of this one of the biggest cemetery of Islamic Period.

 Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, was the guest of honour at the conference, the inauguration session has started at 12 noon and was attended by the Provincial Minister for Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Syed Sardar Ali Shah, Provincial Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Muhammad Ali Malkani, PPP Senator Sassui Palijo, MPA Syed Rukhsana Shah, MPA Syed Sardar Ahmed, Secretary Endowment Fund Trust Hameed Akhund, Representative of UNESCO Qazi Ayaz Mahesar, PPP District President Thatta Sadiq Ali Memon, PPP local leader Imtiaz Ahmed Qureshi, former MNA Dr. Abdul Wahid Soomro, International Researchers from USA, UK, Iran, Lebanon, Spain, Canada, France, Italy, Cultural delegates from Germany and Archaeologists, Heritage Experts, journalists, literacy personalities, scholars and people from all walks of life.

A book titled, “Epigraphy of Makli” by Dr. Kaleemullah Lashari was launched during the inauguration session. The book is a unique research work on epigraphy of Makli, covered even a single slab with graves present at the site with photographs and short description. The Department, with collaboration of Endowment Trust has also launched the Second Edition of Dr. Ahmed Hassan Dani’s remarkable work on Architectural History of Makli Monuments named, THATTA: MAKLI MONUMENTS-Islamic Architecture. Its first Edition was published by renowned Scholar Dr. N.A.Baloch in 1982. In this book, Thatta Monuments, in essence of the Makli Monuments has been projected in the context of local geographical-cum-historical setting. Both of the books are available at the site souvenir shop (Makli) which is now open for public.

The two-day conference has four sessions which touch on nearly every topic arising from Makli’s architecture to its history, from its Religious importance to its Regional aspects. It also had an educational session on Heritage Preservation for students to aware them about the importance and the conservation techniques as well.  It was an opportunity for Students of different Universities; The University of Karachi, The University of Sindh, The Sir Syed University of Engineering, and Technology, The NED University of Engineering and Technology and The Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture to meet and learn from field experts during lunch and Hi-tea breaks. Besides the conference, the department has also organised a field tours for delegates and students and a stay at Keenjar Lake for Scholars to enjoy a night at Mehran.
